The verdict
If you just bought a Samsung, WD, SanDisk, Crucial or Seagate SSD, check the manufacturer's site before downloading anything else. These utilities are free, purpose-built for exactly the migration you are doing, and usually the fastest route from box to booting system.
Who it is for
Anyone whose new SSD is from a major brand and who wants a one-off migration with no software research.
Strengths
Free and supported by the company that made your drive
Tuned for that hardware — alignment and over-provisioning handled automatically
Very few decisions to make; hard to get wrong
Often bundled with firmware updates and health monitoring
Limitations
The destination drive must be that vendor's brand — the tool refuses otherwise
BitLocker-encrypted or bad-sectored source drives frequently cause failures
Little control over partition layout; no manual resizing in some versions
Feature sets and even product names change between versions
Worth knowing
Samsung folded Samsung Data Migration into Samsung Magician during 2026, so newer guides pointing at a standalone SDM download may be out of date. WD, SanDisk and Crucial ship rebranded, drive-locked Acronis builds.
The interface
Screenshot slot. Vendor screenshots are copyrighted, so none are bundled with
this site — install SSD vendor tools (Samsung, WD, Crucial, Seagate), capture its window yourself, save the file into
assets/img/screenshots/ and swap the src above. See the README in
that folder.
Before you clone anything
The destination drive is erased completely. Confirm which physical disk is which — by
size, model number and serial, not just by drive letter — and keep a separate backup of
anything irreplaceable. Our pre-clone checklist
takes about fifteen minutes and prevents most disasters.
