The verdict

For years the answer to "what should I use?" was Macrium Reflect Free. That edition stopped receiving updates on 1 January 2024 and has since gone fully end-of-life, so it should no longer be used. The paid Reflect X remains one of the fastest and most reliable imaging and cloning engines available on Windows.

Who it is for

People who image their PC regularly and want the most dependable Windows recovery story, and who accept a subscription.

Strengths

  • Extremely reliable clone and image engine with a long track record
  • Rapid Delta Clone only rewrites changed blocks on repeat clones
  • Excellent WinPE rescue media with driver injection
  • viBoot lets you boot an image as a virtual machine to test it
  • Strong scheduling, retention and verification options

Limitations

  • No free edition any more — the old Free build is end-of-life and unpatched
  • Subscription pricing annoys long-time perpetual-licence users
  • Interface is dense and assumes some technical vocabulary
  • Windows only

Worth knowing

If you find an old Macrium Reflect Free installer floating around, do not rely on it: it receives no security or OS-compatibility fixes. Hasleo Backup Suite Free and Veeam Agent Free are the usual replacements.

Before you clone anything The destination drive is erased completely. Confirm which physical disk is which — by size, model number and serial, not just by drive letter — and keep a separate backup of anything irreplaceable. Our pre-clone checklist takes about fifteen minutes and prevents most disasters.
