The verdict

A well-built free backup program with a clone button that stops short of the one job most people came for. The Standard edition clones data disks and individual partitions; cloning the Windows system disk requires Professional. Excellent as free imaging software, mediocre value as free cloning software.

Who it is for

People who want free scheduled disk images with a clean interface, and who are willing to pay if they also need boot-drive migration.

Strengths

  • Genuinely capable free tier for backup, sync and file-level restore
  • Clear, modern interface — one of the easiest in this category
  • Free edition creates bootable rescue media
  • Intelligent (used-sectors-only) cloning and 4K alignment for SSDs
  • Paid licence is perpetual rather than an annual subscription

Limitations

  • System clone and disk clone of the OS drive are locked to the paid edition
  • Persistent in-app prompts to upgrade
  • AOMEI's own comparison articles are marketing, not neutral reviews

Worth knowing

If you only need to clone once, compare the cost of a Professional licence against spending twenty minutes with the free Rescuezilla or Hasleo instead.

Before you clone anything The destination drive is erased completely. Confirm which physical disk is which — by size, model number and serial, not just by drive letter — and keep a separate backup of anything irreplaceable. Our pre-clone checklist takes about fifteen minutes and prevents most disasters.
